A Wild Day at the Henry Doorly Zoo

If you’re ever passing through Omaha, Nebraska — or even remotely nearby — do yourself (and your kids!) a favor and go to the Henry Doorly Zoo. Trust us. This isn’t just any zoo. This place is an adventure. This has been one of our family favorites during the time that we’ve lived in Omaha.

It felt like stepping into several different worlds all in one place. From lush rainforests and underwater tunnels to desert landscapes and towering giraffes, the Henry Doorly Zoo is hands-down the best zoo in the country!

What Makes It So Special?

This zoo is famous for good reason. It’s home to one of the world’s largest indoor rainforests, a massive desert dome (yes, an actual desert under a dome!), and an aquarium that always has our kids glued to the glass for way longer than we expect.

The Lied Jungle is one of our favorites — you walk through a dense, tropical world with monkeys swinging overhead, birds flying free, and even a waterfall or two. It feels less like a zoo and more like a mini expedition. The Desert Dome is equally stunning and gives us a whole new appreciation for creatures that thrive in dry climates. And the Suzanne and Walter Scott Aquarium? Sharks, glowing jellyfish, sea turtles, and a walk-through tunnel that makes us feel like we are swimming right beside them.

One of the hidden gems of the Henry Doorly Zoo is the Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails — a dream come true for kids who need to run, climb, and explore! This nature-based play area is packed with treehouses, rope bridges, splash zones, sand pits, and hands-on activities that let kids burn off energy while connecting with the outdoors. It’s not just a break from exhibits — it’s an experience all on its own. Our kids could’ve spent hours here (and honestly, we didn’t mind relaxing in the shade nearby). It’s the perfect reminder that play is learning, too — and part of the adventure!

Kid-Approved Favorites

Our 9-year-old always begs to go on the skyfari (a ski-lift-style ride that takes you high above the zoo), while our 11-year-old is obsessed with the big cats — especially the tigers. Our teen loved the behind-the-scenes-style exhibits and how much freedom there is to explore at your own pace. And let’s be honest — the adults are always just as wide-eyed and excited as the kids.

Absolutely! Here’s a fun and helpful paragraph about the splash pad at the Henry Doorly Zoo:

After a full day of exploring, the splash pad at the Henry Doorly Zoo is the perfect way to cool down and let the kids run wild. Located near the Bay Family Children’s Adventure Trails, this water play area is a summertime favorite — with fountains, sprayers, and just the right amount of splash to turn a zoo visit into a mini water park experience. It’s a great mid-day break spot, especially on hot Nebraska afternoons. Pro tip: pack a change of clothes or swimsuits for the kiddos — you will get soaked, and they’ll love every second of it!

Bonus: there’s plenty of stroller-friendly paths, shaded rest areas, and spots to picnic, so you can easily make a day of it without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Tips for Your Visit

  • Arrive early. This zoo is huge, and you’ll want the full day.
  • Bring water bottles and snacks. There are food options inside, but they can get pricey.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. Your feet will thank you.
  • Don’t skip the indoor exhibits. Even if it’s hot or cold out, there’s something magical in every corner — and plenty of AC/heating inside!
  • Check the website for animal encounter times. Some of the talks and feedings are worth the schedule shift!

Why We Loved It

Of course! Here’s a warm and personal paragraph about why your family loves the zoo:

We love the zoo because it gives our family a chance to slow down and experience wonder together. It’s not just about seeing animals — it’s about connecting with nature, asking questions, and sharing wide-eyed moments we’ll never forget. Every visit is a new adventure, whether we’re watching elephants play, walking through the rainforest, or laughing at the sea lions’ silly swims. The zoo brings learning to life in the most joyful, hands-on way, and it’s one of the few places where all of us — from littles to grown-ups — feel equally amazed. It’s wild, it’s fun, and it’s one of our favorite ways to make memories as a family.

If you’re planning your family travel route through the Midwest, the Henry Doorly Zoo is a must. It’s more than a zoo — it’s an immersive experience that connects you to the wonder of the animal world in the most hands-on, heart-filled way.

Until next time, Omaha 🐘
